DEGRADING

‘Degrading’

private view Tuesday 5 February 6 – 9pm

Entropy for all!

21 artists have been invited to show work, (most especially conceived for the exhibition) that either degrades the audience / subject / author and/or just physically degrades. Viewers will be encouraged to interact with or even destroy some of the works.

Whatever the outcome, at the end of the show, all work will be disposed of. There will be two bins – Wet and Dry – depending on whether the disposed works are more conceptual or formal.

Is it a long drawn out performance or an extremely short exhibition? At some point during the course of the evening the boundary between creation/destruction and artist/viewer will be crossed as everything disintegrates, leaving little trace and certainly no more art.

  1. I think DEGRADING makes sense as the show is the process.

Marcus and I are working on a collaborative piece. We will install photographs of ourselves on the floor for people to trample all over.

    1. You’re right. DEGRADING as in the process works for all the meanings:

as in causing a loss of self-respect; humiliating

      and

      as in losing it’s value

      and

      as in deteriorating

  2. I like the title DEGRADED. I also like the very fashionable DOWNGRADE which is the new DOWNTURN. Not as scary as DOWNSPIN.

However, regardless of the title of the show I’ll bring into the gallery an old soft toy lamb – the perfect symbol of innocence victimised.

  3. I shall procure a ‘kitchen towel three-pack’ and once the disposable paper sheets have all been used, I shall save the interior rolls. Around these, I shall tie rubber bows, from top to bottom. The bows will be carefully crafted from cut up bicycle tyre inner tubes. I shall instruct the curatorial technicians to attach the three cartons to a wall within the exhibiting space, aligned vertically and with 45mm spacing between the three. I shall invite spectators attending the event to each untie a bow, and as they do so the carton interiors will be unveiled to the world! The piece shall be called ‘Entropia II’, which is the Spanish word for ‘entropy,’ which means lack of order or predictability; the gradual decline into disorder. At the close of the occasion, I shall invite Herzog Dellafiore to carry the three cartons to the communal recycling bins, which are situated only a short walk from the gallery, where they shall be responsibly deposited, to begin a new and uncertain chapter of their existence.

  4. DEGRADED as a title sounds good to me ?
I think Id hang a Page 3 from the Sun. Women only are allowed to write on it whatever they want. then i send it to dominic mohan..

  5. one sunny day in summer 2010 we left graz to cruise to susak and i got an expired bonboniere as a gift for my kids – i was not angry but i left the box in my hot car – coming back from the island after one month i found mali losinji > sunpower when i opened the box – soon in london while madagascar 2 this artefact will expire in getting x x x x x x

  6. There isn’t a title for the show yet but the theme will be degraded / degrading / rubbish

if you have any suggestions for a title, please let me know.

It’s a one-day show at studio1.1 on February 5 and I would like the exhibition to have stuff that looks like art but that gets gradually degraded to eventually be worthless and to be chucked away at the end of the show.

so, for example, you could show art that can:
    be eaten/ consumed/defecated
    be vandalised/destroyed/ crushed
    self-destruct
    decompose / dissolved in acid
    stolen
    be degrading

as long as it gets chucked away at the end of the night

  7. I’m in. I will be exhibiting a painting and invite people to paint over it.

  8. I shall be using fruit as a metaphor, to the ultimate pointlessness of healthy eating.

I’ll use existing leatherwork findings, not so expensive, so no worries about going in the Bin!!
